VKI Celebrates 70 Years of Scientific Excellence, Innovation and Global Impact

28 September 2026 Posted by admin News No Comments

On 18 and 19 September, Flanders Space member von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) celebrated an exceptional milestone: its 70th anniversary.

The two-day celebration brought together an international community of partners, alumni, researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, universities, research organisations and institutional stakeholders. It provided an opportunity not only to reflect on seven decades of scientific excellence, education and collaboration, but also to look ahead at VKI’s role in addressing some of the major aerospace, space, defence and engineering challenges of the future.

Seven decades of pushing scientific boundaries

Since its creation, VKI has developed into an internationally recognised centre of excellence for research and education in fluid dynamics. Its expertise and infrastructure support research across aerospace, space, defence, environmental science and engineering, while its educational mission has helped develop generations of scientists and engineers from around the world.

The anniversary demonstrated the breadth of this international network. Representatives from industry, academia, government agencies, defence organisations and leading international institutions joined the celebrations, underlining the strategic importance of VKI’s research capabilities and its ability to bring different parts of the scientific and industrial ecosystem together.

Strong commitment to VKI’s future

The anniversary also brought important news for the Institute’s future.

Belgian Defence reaffirmed its confidence in VKI with a sustained commitment of €10 million per year. This significant investment underlines the strategic value of VKI’s expertise, research infrastructure and scientific capabilities for Belgium and its defence ecosystem.

The commitment was complemented by renewed support from BELSPO, the Belgian Science Policy Office, for VKI’s research activities and future development.

Another important milestone was the signing of a collaboration agreement between VKI and Sonaca, formalised by Sonaca CEO Yves Delatte and VKI Managing Director Peter Grognard. The agreement paves the way for strengthened cooperation between the two organisations in the years ahead.

An important partner for the future of space

Space was naturally an important part of the anniversary programme.

During the celebrations, representatives from ESA and NASA highlighted VKI’s strategic relevance to future space exploration. Its advanced research infrastructure – including the Plasmatron, hypersonic test facilities, cryogenic testing capabilities and the DRAG-ON Very Low Earth Orbit facility – enables research in areas ranging from atmospheric re-entry to space debris mitigation.

This combination of specialised infrastructure, scientific expertise and international collaboration enables VKI to contribute to the design, development and validation of critical technologies and flight systems needed for future space missions.

For Flanders Space, VKI represents an important part of a Flemish space ecosystem that brings together research, technology, industry and innovation. Its ability to combine fundamental research with practical engineering challenges illustrates the importance of strong knowledge institutions in building Europe’s future space capabilities.

Looking towards the next chapter

The anniversary celebrations concluded with an Alumni Day, bringing together VKI graduates, faculty, researchers and friends of the Institute. It was an opportunity to celebrate not only the achievements of the past seven decades, but also the international community that has grown around VKI and its ambitions for the future.

Flanders Space warmly congratulates the entire VKI team on this remarkable 70th anniversary.

Seventy years of scientific excellence is an achievement worth celebrating. More importantly, the continued confidence of government, industry, academia and international partners demonstrates that VKI’s story is far from finished.

We are proud to have VKI as part of the Flanders Space ecosystem and look forward to the discoveries, technologies and collaborations that will shape its next chapter.
