On 2 October, the members of Flanders Space gathered at The Beacon in Antwerp to learn about the updated strategy and ambitions for the coming years. With the launch of Flanders Space 2.0, new initiatives in the fields of security and defence, and a strengthened organisation, the Flemish space sector is taking a significant step forward.

A new phase for Flanders Space
With the official launch of the Flanders Space Innovative Business Network (IBN) on 1 September 2026, a new phase is beginning. The focus is stronger than ever on collaboration, innovation and the translation of space technologies into concrete economic and societal applications.
In doing so, Flanders Space aims not only to connect existing space companies and knowledge institutions, but also to involve new players, start-ups and companies from other sectors in the development of innovative solutions.
The revised strategy is based on six pillars: downstream applications, European space programmes, dual-use and defence, internationalisation, societal and economic impact, and the development of new talent.
Space for security and defence
A key development is the further integration of space within the Flemish Innovation and Industry Strategy for Security and Defence (VISD).
Under the leadership of the new programme manager, Kim Coppens, work is underway to strengthen collaboration between space companies, defence firms and research institutions. Particular attention is being paid to technologies for, amongst other things, Earth observation, satellite communications, navigation, autonomous systems and the early detection of threats.
This approach aims to create new opportunities for Flemish companies, in both civil and security and defence applications.
Greater visibility and collaboration
Flanders Space’s communication and positioning are also being given a fresh impetus. With the arrival of Jean Luc Devisscher to support marketing and communication, work is underway to establish a clearer identity, greater visibility for members and an active presence at national and international events.
Through newsletters, interviews, social media, webinars and targeted publications, Flanders Space aims to strongly highlight its members’ expertise and innovations.
The active involvement of our members remains essential in this regard. After all, their knowledge, projects and ambitions are the driving force behind our ecosystem.
Stronger together in space
With Flanders Space 2.0, we are continuing to build a dynamic and internationally connected space network that stimulates innovation, creates partnerships and helps develop new market opportunities.
Together, we are pooling expertise, accelerating innovation and creating opportunities in space and beyond.
