From a university spin-off to an internationally recognised space technology company, Flanders Space member arcsec celebrates five years of innovation, growth and teamwork.
Founded in 2020 as a spin-off from KU Leuven, Flanders Space member arcsec has rapidly established itself as an innovative player in satellite navigation and control technologies. Based in Leuven, the company develops highly precise Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS), enabling satellites to determine their orientation, maintain stability and accurately perform their missions in space.
At the heart of its technology are advanced star trackers, which use celestial patterns to determine a satellite’s orientation with exceptional precision. Combined with innovative reaction wheel technology and intelligent onboard processing, these solutions support applications ranging from Earth observation and scientific exploration to satellite communications.
But arcsec’s ambitions extend beyond satellite positioning. As space becomes increasingly congested, the company is developing solutions for Space Situational Awareness (SSA), helping satellites detect and track space debris and ultimately enabling more autonomous collision avoidance.
Five years of remarkable progress
In just five years, arcsec has evolved from an ambitious research initiative into a growing international business. With more than 200 star trackers delivered, including many already operating in orbit, its technology supports both European Space Agency (ESA) scientific missions and commercial satellite operations.
The company’s growth speaks for itself: system sales doubled between 2024 and 2025, while its expanding activities led to the recruitment of additional engineering, software and operations specialists. To support this development, arcsec recently moved into larger, modern facilities in Leuven, providing additional space for innovation, testing and future expansion.
